Donation Spotlight: Plan International

Ahoy Mateys!

This is the Captain speaking to discuss life!

I’ve mentioned before that I try to give 10% of my net income to charities but haven’t delved into the specifics much besides this post.

It is time for another update!

The longest running charity that I give to each month is Plan International USA!

I have been donating $60 per month since July 2012!

Perhaps the funniest story of how I chose a charity to fund, I was actually solicited.

I absolutely LOVE door-to-door sales people/ solicitors.

Girl scouts are of course my favorite, because seriously who can say no to thin mint deliciousness, but I enjoy talking to anyone who has the courage to knock on my door because they usually have interesting stories.

In this instance, I was living on a 3rd floor apartment (no elevator) and had just got home from work when I hear a knock on the door.

An absolutely EXHAUSTED looking girl about my age is at the door and asks if I would be interested in hearing about this organization: Plan International. Obviously, she and her teammate have been up and down the stairs knocking on everyone’s door in the complex.

I invite them in, give them water, they gave their whole spiel, and I was hooked.

Plan International is an organization that works world-wide to help communities in need, specifically in developing countries. Their specific targets are the children of these areas, helping them get the education and health care they need and helping them to get out of poverty.

From their website:

Our Vision

Our vision is of a world in which all children realize their full potential in societies that respect people’s rights and dignity.

Our Mission

Plan strives to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life of vulnerable children in developing countries by:

  • Enabling children, their families and their communities to meet basic needs and to increase their ability to participate in and benefit from their societies;
  • Fostering relationships to increase understanding and unity among peoples of different cultures and countries; and
  • Promoting the rights and interests of the world’s children.
Child Sponsorship

Plan’s work is made possible thanks to nearly 1,100,000 people in 21 donor countries who support us by sponsoring a child as well as through donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, grants, and strategic partnerships with other organizations.

Since 2012, I have been sponsoring a young boy in the Philippians. Through the continuous updates from Plan, I have had the opportunity to write to him and to see him grow through the years.

Each month, my money goes to work in his community making sure there is water to drink, food to eat, shelter for everyone, and so much more.

Since joining, I have seen so much good being done, and I have no desire to stop anytime soon.

If you have been looking for a group to donate to, for any reason. I highly advise Plan International USA and encourage you to check out their website.

Until next time, avast ye scoundrels!

Credit Cards Can Save You Money

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss finance!

-And lie to you!

What?! No! We are not going to lie to our friends!

-But you said we were going to discuss finance.

…and we are…

-No! The title says “Credit Cards Can Save You Money.” Obviously we are either lying to our friends or this is going to be one of those parody articles where you give good advise disguised as bad advice.

Ok, you have a point, but I really am being honest!

Let me explain.

Cooking With the Captain!

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain chatting about my latest attempt to actually cook for myself!

I can’t cook.

I am the first to admit this.

I’m ok with grilled cheeses and the occasional pasta, but beyond that I am rather helpless.

Tuesday, I decided this needed to change and went about making myself some cooked chicken!

The last time I made chicken for myself, 2-3 years ago, the recipe I had was to put the chicken in a cake tin with some Italian vinaigrette in an oven at 400 deg for about 20 min.

Easy peasy right?

Oh boy was I wrong.

Stopping Donations…For Now

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss life!…with a dash of finance as well.

-Wow Captain. I’d say you were being generous but from the title it looks like the opposite.

I agree, but there is a reason behind the madness which I am going to share!

-Oh goody.

Oh hush you.

For any who have seen my last budget or read this post, you know I enjoy giving to charity and have done so for awhile.

Somewhat sadly, I have made the decision to temporarily stop my charitable giving for now.

-“Sadly”? You get an extra 400 doubloons a month and you are sad!?

Yes! Donating is very important to me!

-Well then, why are you stopping?

Two reasons: paperwork and a new year.

-…you lost me.

Lemme start with the paperwork. Continue reading “Stopping Donations…For Now”

No House :(

Ahoy Mateys

I’m rather sad today.

I put an offer on this nice 1 bed/ 1.5 bath two-story condo and despite offering over list price, I was beaten out and another person got the place.

What really sucked was that I thought I lost the place on Friday since the seller had 3 offers and one was for 5k over list which I was unwilling to meet. So I had resigned myself to keep looking, but then the seller comes back on Saturday saying they think they would accept my offer instead!!

What?! Crazy right??

I spent the entirety of Saturday with my phone glued to my hand waiting for confirmation and official notice that they were accepting my offer.

No news.

Wake up Sunday, tense as a bowstring at 8 am (after staying up till 2 am hoping for a phone call) and just wait as patiently as I could.

Finally text asking if any news just after lunch.

Find out seller accepted a different offer 15 min before.

Heart wrenching to say the least, got my hopes brought up and then my feet kicked out under me.

I’m sad and rather distraught about it all.

Not saying the place was perfect and my only chance at happiness, not by any means.

But it was certainly the first place that I walked into and really felt like I could call it home.

And I had plans damn it!

Went to a huge furniture store Saturday to check it out (was planning on going before I put the offer in, just a cursory walk-through to see what was available) and everything I saw I tried to picture in this condo.

Would this couch fit in the living room? Is there enough space for this dining table and these chairs? This light fixture would look pretty nice in the stairway. Ooo, this coffee table has extra chairs for when guests come over and sit in front of the fireplace!

All that hope and tension and planning gone to waste.

I hate when that happens.

The furniture store was nice, saw lots of good things that could work no matter where I move.

I now understand the whole offering process a lot better.

I know for a fact that there can be a place I feel comfortable enough to call home out there somewhere.

Overall, this is a good experience and I get to come out of it ahead, even if its not the way I hoped.

Still, I’m going to drown my sorrows in a large snow cone and a pizza now.

Until next time,

Avast ye scoundrels!

Map to 1,000,000 Doubloons – August 2015 Update

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss finance!

Everyone knows that to the best pirate around, you need to have a big pile of coins to hide!

-Why have the coins if you’re just going to hide them?

Because it’s fun! It’s the pirates’ way!

-I will never understand pirates.

Well I will never understand parrots so that makes us even.

Now, the amount of coins desired by each pirate varies, some want a little pile to call their own, others want to own Fort Knox. Myself, I have set a fairly reasonable goal to get to a Net Worth of $1,000,000 simply because it’s a nice round number.

As of the 1st of this month, I have a net worth of 150,008.27 doubloons!

Last month my net worth was 155,515.25 doubloons! That means I have decreased by 5,506.98!

Not the best month I’ve had.

Here’s how it breaks down:
