Map to 1,000,000 Doubloons – October 2015 Update

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss finance!

Everyone knows that to the best pirate around, you need to have a big pile of coins to hide!

-Why have the coins if you’re just going to hide them?

Because it’s fun! It’s the pirates’ way!

-I will never understand pirates.

Well I will never understand parrots so that makes us even.

Now, the amount of coins desired by each pirate varies, some want a little pile to call their own, others want to own Fort Knox. Myself, I have set a fairly reasonable goal to get to a Net Worth of $1,000,000 simply because it’s a nice round number.

As of the 1st of this month, I have a net worth of 150,502.60 doubloons!

Last month my net worth was 148,546.92 doubloons! That means I have increased by 1,955.68!

This is pretty darn sweet considering I’ve knocked my car’s worth out of calculations!

Here’s how it breaks down:

I Bought a Car

Ahoy Mateys!

This is the Captain here to talk about life!

Back in this post, I described my reasons for wanting to sell my car and getting a new one. (Well, a used one. A “new to me” one. Y’all know what I mean.

Funny enough, I wrote that post on Friday, and wound up buying a car on Saturday. So by the time the post came out on Sunday, I had already made my decision and signed the paperwork.

The internet is weird that way.

Anyway, Saturday morning, I woke up with a spring in my step and determination in my heart and headed to the dealership.

Mistake #1.

Decisions, Decisions

Ahoy Mateys!

The Captain here to discuss finance and life!

I’m buying a house currently and have been learning a lot on the process.

#1 thing I have learned?

I haven’t even bought the darn thing yet and I’m already out 2 grand, with promise of another 20 grand at closing.

The Devil is in the Details

Or does the phrase go “God is in the details”?

Well a quick google shows both work so that’s cool.

At the moment, it certainly feels more like the devil as my to-do list seems to be growing exponentially daily!

Of course the reason for my extended to-do list is that I was able to find and secure a house! So maybe that would be god since that’s a good thing.

Or it could be the devil tempting me and therefore is a bad thing!

I dunno, I really don’t think either of these is true (I’m atheist after all), but it can be fun to speculate at times.

How Much House Do I Really NEED?

Ahoy mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss life!

I’ve mentioned before that I am currently on the hunt for a house.

– Don’t pirates normally live on ships?

Well sure, but they also need places to stay while they are on land for an extended period of time.

-How extended?

The foreseeable future.

-That’s pretty extended…

Yup. Sadly still in my landlubber days. My dream ship is on hold for now.

But houses can still be fun!

My house search is focusing on a few main ideas:

Car Luxury

Ahoy Mateys!

This is the Captain speaking with my feathery companion Norry to discuss life!

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and a lot of reading about whether or not I should sell my car.

Well, I currently have a 2012 Ford Edge SEL and I’ve been pondering multiple reasons:

  • It’s an SUV so the gas mileage isn’t the best
  • It’s way bigger than I, as a single person, need
  • I could sell it, buy a smaller cheaper car, and pocket the cash
  • I could sell it, buy a scooter, and really pocket some cash

-No, I meant why do you even have a car? Why don’t you fly everywhere?

Because I don’t have wings, numb nuts!

-Gee, you don’t have to be so snippy. Then why don’t you get in your ship and sail everywhere?

Perhaps sadly, I do not live in Venice where that might be an option. Texas is a place that requires some driving to get to most places.

Now, I also have good reasons to KEEP the car:

  • It is completely PAID for
  • It is very comfy
  • It comes in hand the times I do need space for transporting people or stuff
  • Heated seats are AMAZING in winter

-Hmmm, 4 good points vs 4 bad points. Looks like a tie!

If you really look at the lists, the reasons for selling it are practical while the reasons for keeping it are more comfort related.

I don’t NEED heated seats, satellite radio, Bluetooth, voice recognition, leather seats, ambient lighting, or a navigation system.

They are, however, very NICE things to have.

The question really is whether all that is worth $8000 to me.

-Rather random number, where did $8000 come from?

According to Kelly Blue Book, my car is currently worth about $18,140.00.

I can get a nice, used sedan with good gas mileage for about $10,000.

So, by selling my car for a smaller, more fuel efficient car, I can add $8,000 to my bank account pretty easily, not to mention the long term savings on fuel.

-Starting to make sense. Of course, gas is really cheap right now, you really won’t see huge savings there.

Perhaps not now, but in a few years as the barrel goes back up, fuel efficient rides will be in high demand.

-You humans really just need to figure out how to grow wings.

It would make things easier.

If you are reading this and have an opinion, feel free to comment below, I would love some outside input!

-I just told you what to do!! Why do you need more input??

“Growing wings” is not a FEASIBLE option.

-You just aren’t trying hard enough.

So yeah, any thoughts, feel free to comment below!

Until next time,

Avast ye scoundrels!
